Where to go

Nelson Hospital

Nelson Hospital provides abortion services up to 13 weeks of pregnancy.

If your pregnancy is further along than 14 weeks or there are significant medical or personal reasons you will be referred to Te Mahoe Unit in Wellington Hospital.

The First Step

To be referred, you can see a GP or Family Planning doctor. They will talk to you and organise some essential blood and swab tests, offer you a counselling appointment and, if you wish, book you in to the clinic at Nelson Hospital.

Counselling

Counselling is available at the Nelson Hospital, and is offered to every patient. This usually arranged by the referring doctor after the initial appointment.

Counselling is also available post-procedure.

Medical Termination at Nelson Hospital

Medical termination is available up to 9 weeks of pregnancy.

Surgical Termination at Nelson Hospital

The procedure is done by vacuum aspiration under general anaesthetic (asleep) up to 13 weeks of pregnancy.

Surgical Termination after 13 weeks

Patients are referred to the Te Mahoe Unit at Wellington Hospital.

Patients travelling to Wellington are directed to WINZ if they are in financial difficulty and can claim under a Special Needs Grant for $300.00 for their travel expenses.

Follow up

Follow-up is provided by the referring doctor or the operating doctor if preferred by the patient. Follow-up counselling is available in the Social Work Department if needed.
